. Three weeks have passed since a sheep was torn by a wolf in the meadow in Merzhausen. Since then, there has been no trace of the predator. But the attack made a big impression on sheep farmer Franz Asal. He is now upgrading his fence. Two dozen sheep and goat farmers in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district applied for money from the state this year to protect their herds from wolf attacks.
Where is the wolf?
So far, the Forstliche Versuchsanstalt (FVA) in Freiburg has not received any further secured traces of GW1896m – that is the identification number of the wolf. Since November 24th, the day of the Merzhauser sheep rupture, the FVA has received 50 wolf reports from all over Baden-Württemberg. From Merzhausen itself there was only one further sighting report, which the FVA assessed as “unsafe”. “A mix-up is more likely here,” says Felix Böcker from the FVA.
