NEW YORK.- An analysis carried out in NY let it be seen that many more New Yorkers contracted the coronavirus from those confirmed with laboratory tests. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo reported that an analysis of 3,000 people showed that almost 14% presented antibodies to Covid-19, which suggested that 2.7 million residents across the state may have been infected.

Cuomo cautioned that the data was preliminary and that the sample of people analyzed was small. Participants were hastily recruited from shopping malls and supermarkets, which means they were healthy enough to leave their homes.

However, the governor said knowing how many people already had antibodies and who are possibly immune to the virus could help establish policy on when to reopen parts of the state. “We will have a larger and larger sample, but I want to have pictures of what happens with that rate. Does it go up, does it stay stable, does it go down? And it can really give us data to make decisions“Cuomo said.

Hours earlier, the New York City Health Commissioner said that up to one million people would have been exposed to the coronavirus. More than 263,000 people in the city tested positive for the virus“But that really, I think, is just the tip of the iceberg,” said Dr. Oxiris Barbot.

Meanwhile, he also indicated that the city keeps asking those who believe they have the virus, but that they are not seriously ill, that refrain from requesting evidence, which is why the actual number of patients is unknown. “I would not be surprised if there are probably a million New Yorkers who have been exposed to Covid-19 right now,” he reflected.
