The Covid-19 a kill more of 40,000 people in France in mid-December 2020. Among the big cities, which were all affected, it is to Toulouse that there was the fewest deaths.
The number of deaths, the most telling indicator
Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the indicators have multiplied. To better understand this virus, scientists are interested in incidence rate (the number of positive tests per 100,000 inhabitants), or even positivity rate (the number of people who tested positive (RT-PCR and antigen test) for the first time in more than 60 days compared to the total number of people who tested positive or negative over a given period).
For the general public, these somewhat abstract notions have had fairly concrete consequences, in particular through the political measures which resulted from these figures, in particular when nine metropolises were put under curfew, largely because of their incidence rate.
But ultimately, what will remain of the epidemic, when it is over, is the death toll. For now, around 40,000 people have already succumbed to Covid-19 in France. And the victims are numerous in the big cities, where the density is high.
Toulouse less affected by deaths than other metropolises
On the France Public Health site, we find the number of deaths due to Covid-19, since March. These figures are departmental, but are quite close to the number of deaths in metropolitan France, because there are hospitals.
According to these figures, Paris and the Île de France region are the most affected, followed by Lyon, Lille and Marseille :
- Paris : 2588
- Lyon : 1771
- Little : 1757
- Marseille : 1622
- Strasbourg : 1236
- Nice : 500
- Toulon : 441
- Bordeaux : 420
- Nantes : 377
- Toulouse : 315
As of December 16, 315 people have died from Covid-19 in 2020 in Toulouse.
Even “medium” cities as Montpellier (445 dead), Dijon (464), or Rouen (620), were more affected.
A second wave stronger than the first
Toulouse in particular experienced very few deaths during the first wave. At May 15, 2020, the city had only 61 deaths linked to Covid-19.
For now, 254 people died during the second wave.
203 patients died in hospital
In Haute-Garonne, 203 patients died in hospital, 112 in nursing homes or at home.
In total, 2,331 people undergoing hospital treatment were able to reach their homes after being treated.
Compulsory masks, geographical location, weather …
It is difficult to know why Toulouse has been less affected than other cities.
The Pink City was one of the first to make the mask mandatory as early as August, and experienced all measures to limit its spread, in the image of the curfew.
Overall, as reported by health Minister, Oliver veran, during its last press conference, the west of France is less affected than the east.
First, because the first large clusters, during the first wave, arrived from the Grand-Est.
Then the minister put forward the weather situation, arguing that the cold of the east, in particular at the level of the Alps, induces behaviors which favor the circulation of the virus, such as the fact of not ventilating.
Men more affected than women
In our department, men have died more from Covid-19 than women.
197 men died from Covid-19 in 2020 in Haute-Garonne, compared to 118 women.
The vast majority of deaths among the elderly
Regarding the age of the deceased, Santé Publique France only delivers regional figures.
Out of 1913 deaths in Occitania, Only 14 people under 50 died from Covid-19 in 2020, 214 between 50 and 70, 1,684 people were over 70.
Figures that are quite close to elsewhere in France.
