Coronavirus. Germany deplores more than 950 deaths and 27,000 cases in 24 hours

Germany announced on Wednesday that it had recorded a record number of deaths linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, on the first day of the entry into force of a partial containment in an attempt to limit the spread of the pandemic.

In total, 952 people have died in the past 24 hours while 27,728 new coronavirus infections have been identified, according to the Robert Koch health watch institute, a level close to the daily record reached last Friday.

83% of intensive care beds occupied

The previous record of one-day deaths was reached last Friday, with nearly 600, and the situation of intensive care in the country is becoming worrying. In total, some 83% of intensive care beds are occupied in clinics across the country, the Federation of Intensive Doctors (Divi) said on Wednesday morning.

Partial confinement until at least January 10

These announcements add a little more to the climate in the country with the extension of travel restrictions.

The Germans regained the partial confinement they had experienced for several weeks in the spring on Wednesday, with the closure of all “non-essential” businesses and schools.

Until January 10 at least, the authorities wish “to apply throughout the country the principle of” we stay at home “”, according to the text of the resolution adopted on Sunday after a crisis meeting between Chancellor Angela Merkel and the leaders of the 16 regional states.

If they are ordered to drastically limit their contacts and to avoid travel within the country and abroad, the Germans are not subject to permits to leave their homes and have never so far been confined. as strict as that imposed for example in France. These measures are intended not to cause “congestion” of the hospital system when the shortage of personnel is already felt in many establishments and some intensive care services are reaching the end of their capacities.
