“Cristina’s story”, new comic by Paco Roca

The Valencian cartoonist Paco Roca has illustrated “La Historia de Cristina”, a comic that recounts the life of a patient who, after being diagnosed with HER2 breast cancer positive, he receives treatment using a technique he has never heard of: neoadjuvant treatment.

Neoadjuvant involves administering one or more drugs before surgery, a phase prior to entering the operating room that helps, among other things, to reduce the size of the tumor facilitating its subsequent removal.

The author of “Wrinkles”, “The house” or “The furrows of chance” has joined forces with Roche to explain, in a simple way, the experience of all those women who, After a complicated diagnosis, they face an innovative treatment.

“Without a doubt the comic has a great teaching power, use it to be able explain or reflect on topics that seem interesting to me always motivates me, “says Roca in a statement sent by Roche.

According to the cartoonist, this has been the case of “Cristina’s Story”, which tells how the patient copes with cancer and how, thanks to the care of professionals, she overcomes it “.

Through Cristina’s testimony, Roche aims to give visibility to all women suffering from breast cancer; only in Spain are diagnosed per year about 33,000 new cases.

Inside breast cancer there are different subtypes, of which approximately one 20% are HER2 positive breast cancer, like the one suffered by the protagonist of the comic.

Although until a few years ago breast cancer was approached as a single disease, medical research has made it possible to discover and learn that there are many subtypes and that each of them can be treated in a specific way.

According Beatriz Lozano, Director of Communication, Patients and CSR of Roche Farma Spain, access to information and knowledge by patients of issues related to their health “is a priority” for this firm, and therefore, “it is essential to innovate in informative formats together with artists of the stature of Paco Roca”.

Roca’s comic is available on the Roche Patients website for download, and its video version can also be accessed.
