The number of new corona cases diagnosed in Germany during the last 24 hours has almost doubled from the number a day earlier. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German counterpart of the RIVM, reported no fewer than 27,728 new infections on Wednesday morning and a new record number of almost 1,000 deaths in 24 hours.
On Tuesday, the RKI reported 14,432 new cases, which meant that the number of new infections had been declining for two days in a row. The last figure harshly puts an end to this positive trend. A total of 1,379,238 infections have now been diagnosed in Germany since the start of the corona epidemic.
The latest record number of deaths in a 24-hour period was crushed Wednesday morning. The RKI reported as many as 952 new Covid-related deaths in the last 24 hours. That sad record was less than a week ago at 598. In total, 23,427 people who have been diagnosed with the corona virus have now died of the consequences.
With the latest figures, the dark scenario outlined on Tuesday by Health Minister Jens Spahn and the RKI seems to become reality. They stated that the situation regarding the corona virus in Germany is currently at its worst, but could get much worse.
A hard lockdown will be in effect in Germany from Wednesday. The German Federal government and states agreed on this on Sunday. In that period until January 10, many companies have to close their doors and schools must also in principle close, Chancellor Angela Merkel announced on Sunday.
