Once again, self-organized citizens in the department of Guairá mobilized against the impunity that benefits Rodolfo Friedmann. The protesters came to the seat of the governor’s office asking that Justice act and the loss of the senator’s investiture be given.
While self-convened citizens of this department, with the support of the National Union of Directors of Paraguay (Sinadi), yesterday presented a note to the president of the Chamber of Senators, Óscar Salomón, requesting the convening of an extraordinary meeting for the treatment of the loss of investiture of the ruling Colorado legislator, through the application of article 201 of the Constitution.
“The press accuses him, the parliamentarians themselves accuse him, his own colleagues are accusing him, the people are accusing him of stealing,” questioned one of the protesters in front of the Guairá Government.
Likewise, directors and parents of the children affected by the alleged over-invoicing at lunch and school snack, who accompany the written request, make a direct call to the senators. “Hoping that the Senate meets the moral and ethical height to proceed and enforce the rule of law,” they request a new session to comply with the law.
In the note the citizens reiterate that due to the various illegal and corrupt circumstances aired, investigated and charged by the Public Ministry against Rodolfo Friedmann, they maintain the relevance of the loss of investiture.
“As a consequence, we request that the Chamber of Senators proceed to comply with the regulations, resolving that he be excluded from the bosom as a national senator for the current constitutional period,” they reiterated to the legislators of the Upper House regarding the “shielding” of Friedmann to avoid being subjected to justice. The senator and former MAG head was charged by the Public Ministry, along with five other people, for administration for their own benefit, money laundering, criminal association and passive bribery for the business of the school lunch in Guairá.
Riera backed off and apologized to Lilian and Monges
Senator Enrique Riera publicly apologized to his colleague Lilian Samaniego, after accusing her and Senator Juan Darío Monges of receiving benefits from the exploitation of gold in the Paso Yobái area, Guairá, during a television program; in exchange for voting against the loss of the investiture of Rodolfo Friedmann.
Samaniego refuted the accusations and warned him that if he did not apologize, they would end up in court if he did not recant. “He said that if it was not true, he would apologize, so I hope he apologizes because on this issue I am going to go to the end, and I regret that if he does not do so, we will find ourselves in the courtroom (…)”, Samaniego said. Faced with the demand, Riera yielded “to avoid problems”, and said that next time he will present evidence.
“I apologize to Lilian Graciela Samaniego and also to him (Monges), in the sense that it may be imprudent, as a result of the request of the people who told me not to stop mentioning it because the version I had received was that. (…) Let it be recorded, Lilian publicly apologize to you and Darío Monges, I shouldn’t have done it and next time I’ll try to do it with solid evidence, ”Riera declared. For his part, Monges said he is not bothered by the accusations of someone who has sold himself in a political trial.
Liberals call for return of former senators
A week after the Upper House voted in majority to “save” Rodolfo Friedmann, indefinitely postponing the treatment of the loss of investiture, yesterday the liberal senators Zulma Gómez and Enrique Salyn Buzarquis presented the president of the Upper House, Óscar Salomón, a request to revoke those resolutions in which the expulsions of Dionisio Amarilla, María Eugenia Bajac and Paraguayo Cubas occurred. In principle, the Llanista senator Zulma Gómez had announced in the last session that she would be asking for the reinstatement of her liberal colleagues Dionisio Amarilla and María Eugenia Bajac, after the Colorado senator Lilian Samaniego argued that a sentence from the Judiciary should be awaited.
