[전국][취재N팩트] ‘Remodeled bus’ is quiet, then turns into a catastrophe…Carbon monoxide poisoning is estimated

[앵커]

Classmates in their 50s who were sleeping on a bus that was converted for camping were killed or fell into critical condition.

The police estimate it was caused by poisoning with carbon monoxide.

Let’s connect reporters and listen to detailed stories. Reporter Na Hyun-ho!

First, let’s explain the case outline.

[기자]

It was last weekend that the accident happened.

Four high school alumni in their 50s went camping together in Yeosu and Goheung, Jeollanam-do.

Originally, a 45-seater bus was converted for camping purposes.

However, on the evening of the 13th, two families in the group received a report from the police 112 situation room.

The family who went camping complained that they did not answer the phone for 12 hours.

A police officer who was reported and dispatched found a bus with a group of alumni on an island called Geogeumdo in Goheung, Jeollanam-do.

When I knocked on the bus door, two people got up, and the police explained what was reported and left.

A person who got up in the group made contact with his family, and when he was driving and moving, he felt headache and vomiting.

So I checked the status of the rest of my friends.

I was in bad condition, and I called 119 for first aid.

However, one of them finally died, and the other is still in critical condition.

And the two who got up earlier were also transferred to the hospital and treated.

You went on a trip with alumni and got into a sad accident.

By the way, the reason they died or were injured was suspected of carbon monoxide poisoning?

[기자]

That’s right. They were found to have fallen asleep after drinking alcohol since the evening of the 12th.

They did not wake up until 8 pm on the 13th, when the police found it.

One of the people in the group stated that they turned on the’no-start heater’ installed on the bus floor before going to sleep.

The city-wide heater is a device that allows warm air to come out even when the bus is turned off.

The police estimate that the carbon monoxide generated from the heater in the city was inside the vehicle, causing an accident.

It was also confirmed that the windows of the bus were closed and sealed when they were discovered.

The police are currently investigating the exact cause of the accident, right?

[기자]

The police are focusing on two things.

The first is how carbon monoxide was introduced into the bus.

The police yesterday confirmed that smoke from under the vehicle was flowing into the bus interior during the process of identification.

We plan to send the bus in the accident to the Noodle Tree to experiment under the same conditions as at the time of the accident.

The second is whether the bus has been illegally modified.

The owner of the bus who was in the accident this time bought a used car on the 16th of last month, a month ago.

The police plan to investigate the owners of the buses and the companies that modified the vehicles.

In addition, it is a policy to check where the accidental bus was restructured and that there were no defects at the time by requesting the Transportation Safety Authority.

Every winter, there are always accidents where people die while camping.

What do you need to watch out for in order to prevent an accident?

[기자]

As you said, accidents of being addicted to carbon monoxide while camping are repeated in winter.

In January of last year, 5 family members in Goheung, Jeollanam-do, were injured while sleeping on a camping bus.

The most common cause of an accident is poor ventilation.

This Goheung camping bus accident was also closed with all windows closed.

It is also known that there were no detectors to indicate the generation of carbon monoxide.

In recent years, in the aftermath of Corona 19, the so-called’blowing’ is a trend that goes to a travel destination and solves accommodation in a car.

In particular, camping cars are also steadily increasing.

In 2014, only 125 campers were converted.

In 2019, five years later, it increased to 7,900 units.

However, heating is essential to camp in winter, so gas poisoning accidents occur during this process.

Experts contend that thorough ventilation and equipped with carbon monoxide alarms are paramount.
