Investing in the fight against cancer is vital | News from El Salvador

That the Legislative Assembly expedite the project and that the Law for the control of cancer is a reality and that doctors dedicated to this fight have the required support.

We must not forget the tragedy of suffering from cancer in a country with totally wrong priorities. At the moment the bill for the control of cancer is being prepared.
Cancer is not only faced with good will, as a wise comment made by a woman about the pink color that San Salvador is painted as a memory in the month dedicated to the fight against breast cancer, because it is useless for a capital to be defaced if a hospital does not have the essentials for the timely detection of breast cancer, such as an ultrasound. The reader must understand that all cancerous conditions should have the same priority as breast cancer: they all destroy the family group and an imperative is investment in the detection, management and treatment of cancer in El Salvador. Real alternatives must be sought so that a budget for cancer is available and that funds donated by the European Union are incorporated into the budget of the Nation and are used for such a noble purpose under the strict supervision of donor agencies.
The Health Commission of the Legislative Assembly must follow up and present this bill as soon as possible. We cannot delay any longer and we must eliminate all bureaucratic obstacles so that there is direct communication with the Executive to address everything related to cancer.
El Salvador is going through difficult times; However, they are not excuses to relegate cancer to a distant and forgotten place when those of us who work in health and have had relatives who died of cancer know how heartbreaking and devastating it has to be lived from the moment the disease is discovered to the death of the patient.
And we must look further: cancer in rural areas does not seem to exist when that is where the greatest number of deaths occur, since the inaccessibility of places makes the patient desist from receiving timely treatment. And we cannot forget the poverty that hits the country and that makes it almost impossible to travel to San Salvador, since most of the people who live in rural areas do not have a place to sleep and less money to pay for lodging. It is there where dramas take place like a mother who suffers from breast cancer and her ten-year-old son suffers from leukemia and she in her tragedy must go to radiation therapy and at the same time take care of her son. Perhaps this is a reality that is not known and that is the harshest of all, where poverty stops any attempt to receive treatment.
It is a call for the health authorities to monitor this purpose is achieved. The fight against cancer must receive sufficient financial resources so that all Salvadorans know that if the disease is addressed in its early stages, there is a great opportunity to stop and eradicate it. Money is there; however, it doesn’t seem to matter. A country that maintains an Armed Forces with a very high budget while the institutions that look after the health of the patient must perform miracles with what little they have.
The will to do great things is in those responsible for the institutions that care for cancer patients; however, it takes not only will but money to get ahead. Much of the drama that patients experience is the shortage of medicines, specialized professionals and, little by little, cancer care must be decentralized and that a patient who lives in a remote hamlet of La Unión knows that he will not have to go through an ordeal to get there. to San Salvador. He must be treated in a hospital in his department and that entails allocating economic funds to carry out a dream for many that must become a reality. Despite the economic crisis that the country is experiencing, we must bet on prevention and on an agile and timely diagnosis so that the patient receives treatment as soon as possible. Cancer does not forgive, it is a tragedy like the ones we have experienced in our loved ones.
That the Legislative Assembly expedite the project and that the Law for the control of cancer is a reality and that doctors dedicated to this fight have the required support. The issue of the fight against cancer must be part of the national agenda and have a clear horizon for it to become a reality.
