Helmut Spanner composed a CD
The forced Covid-19 break can awaken creative potential. The picture book illustrator Helmut Spanner has returned to his love for music. In his home studio in Nassenbeuren, the multi-talented artist has now produced his first self-composed and recorded CD entitled “Karussell”. The time in the school band “The Smoking Chickens” at the Musisches Gymnasium in Marktoberdorf and his time as a student in Munich, when he improved his modest salary in various dance bands in addition to his training at the art academy, says the almost 70-year-old, woke him up. His instruments were and are guitar and bass. The piano is included anyway.
So now he’s turning his carousel to danceable, instrumental piano songs. Spanner gets the nostalgic fairground vehicle in motion from the initially leisurely laps. Sometimes he lets it roll like a ship at sea, then jump like a calf in the pasture. At the end, the listeners take part directly in the village country life with a hearty pounding dance with a cock crow, pig grunt and moo.
In between, Helmut Spanner indulges in nostalgic memories of tea dance and boogie parties. The songs celebrate a carefree life and exude a good mood. Even the blues sounds more dreamy than sad to him. His friend, the film director Dominik Graf, writes that these songs “seem like a quote from another time” and convey “an attitude towards life that brought about different, more unbroken feelings than today”. Their happiness is fresh and there is always a harmonic or melodic surprise hidden in it. Alois Knoller
