Symptoms of bowel cancer can be subtle and not necessarily make you sick, and a change in your normal bowel habit may lead to cancer.
Bowel cancer is a general term for cancer that begins in the large intestine – the last part of the digestive system that helps transport waste to get rid of it. Cancer cells in this area of the body can interfere with bowel processes. This is why the first signs of bowel cancer are usually related to toiletry habits, according to Russia Today.
According to the UK Macmillan Charity, a change in a normal bowel habit that occurs without an apparent cause and lasts for more than three weeks is a warning sign.
The charity says bowel disorders are often described as diarrhea or constipation.
Other warning signs include:
Blood in the stool or bleeding.
Unexplained weight loss.
Pain in the abdomen or back.
Feeling that your bowels are not emptying properly after a bowel movement.
• Unexplained tiredness, dizziness, or shortness of breath.
Red blood cell level is lower than normal.
In some cases, bowel cancer can stop the passage of digestive waste products through the intestine – this is known as a bowel obstruction, the NHS explains.
Symptoms of bowel obstruction may include:
• Abdominal pain that is intermittent and sometimes severe.
Unintended weight loss.
Persistent flatulence.
• You are sick with constant flatulence.
Your risk of developing bowel cancer depends on many things, including age, genetics and lifestyle factors.
It is important to note that having one or more risk factors does not necessarily mean that you will develop bowel cancer.
It is very difficult to research the link between diet and cancer, but several studies have shown that eating a lot of red and processed meat increases the risk of bowel cancer.
