Climate-friendly artificial ice surfaces received an ice-cold discharge
“Ice skating is very popular with the people of Linz. Due to its nature, ice skating has only been possible in winter with appropriate weather conditions and the management of the ice rinks has been associated with corresponding costs. In the ever warmer winter, the maintenance of natural ice surfaces becomes more and more expensive. In the recent past, resourceful providers have recognized this problem and started to produce and successfully market substitute material for conventional ice cream. This innovative process would have offered a lot of potential for the city, ”said Deputy Mayor of Planning Markus Hein, explaining the background to the free municipal council proposal.

The synthetic panels are put together like puzzle pieces. This creates artificial ice surfaces of any size that are suitable for ice skating or ice stock sport. The assembly and dismantling is very easy and quick. The expenses of the city of Linz for the maintenance and care of ice rinks are relatively low compared to a natural ice rink. Pure water is sufficient to clean the surface.
“Such an ice surface could have been offered on the fairgrounds or under one of the new Danube bridges, for example. Ice skating or curling would be possible all year round. Both the fair area outside the fair or the area under the bridges would be better used. As a result, the practice of ice sports could have been made independent of the seasons and the weather. Unfortunately, the other factions in the local council have nothing left for a climate-friendly ice rink. Ice surfaces should continue to be cooled at great expense in the warmer winter. A wasted opportunity for a city that likes to be presented as the most innovative in Austria. When it comes to sport, innovation stops. Since the application in the municipal council fizzled out, the last option is a direct discussion with Linz AG. In any case, there is a need for this, as the rush to the existing ice rinks shows. With artificial ice we could offer more and, above all, cheaper ice rinks for the population of our hometown ”, Hein explains in conclusion about the other advantages of his application.
