The company “Labrains” was founded in 2018, but the company’s representatives have been focusing on making cosmetic creams for some time before, says Brūniņa. It has taken quite a long time to arrange the registration of the brand and the choice of the name, although the work on product development has already taken place.

Looking for a solution

“The idea of this idea was skin problems, which manifested itself in both me and my business partner at the same time – when the stress took over, there was an overload at work, but each of them manifested itself in its form – Elina as dry, atopic dermatitis skin, and me – rosacea, “says Brūniņa.

“Despite the fact that we visited various specialists to solve these problems, there was no success for either of them, and with years and different stages of life, these problems only became more acute. The point was added by the birth of a child, quite illuminating that I was doing something Our scientific degrees and my education in applied chemistry have made it possible to understand substances and their effects on skin health and to find regularities, namely that market analysis has shown that skin diseases do not go away with age, but exacerbated and the products available on the cosmetics market are only intended to address a specific problem (which would be a suitable solution for young people, as long as these products are consistent with a sustainable restoration of skin function – Labrains means skin immune-boosting products, not acute therapies) 35-40 years old, “explains Brūniņa.

Formed a team

They have started building a team of chemists, researching substances and looking for solutions that are suitable for the daily care of problematic skin. The company managed to obtain an EU research project, which made a major contribution to research.

“Then there was a long, tedious and repeated development and testing of product variations. We concluded that the biggest threat was the cosmetic preservative systems or solvents used to obtain biologically active substances. We achieved what initially seemed impossible – several raw materials suppliers, “grandi”, thanks to our insistence offered already pure, not dissolved active substance (dissolution or extraction is the process of obtaining a substance from plants or preserving it for longer storage – up to two years, which greatly helps to reduce production costs. Then we turned to cosmetic preservatives, which are intended to improve production for up to 2 years, but whose adverse effects on the skin are quite clear. The result is anti-aging cosmetics for rosacea, and also for dermatitis (a separate product), “says the company’s manager.

Long studies have been done

Speaking about the new product, she says that the company’s chemists, with more than 15 years of experience in the field of cosmetics, studied the effects of natural active ingredients in northern wetland plants for three years. As a result, together with researchers from the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis, the Labrains laboratory managed to create a natural cream that effectively reduces the signs of aging and rosacea. Rosacea is a chronic inflammation of the skin that usually manifests as redness of the face, explains a company spokeswoman. Cosmetic dermatological testing was performed by SIA “Veselības centrs 4”.

“I am very pleased that Labrains laboratory was the first in the world to prove the creation of a unique natural dermocosmetic product, as evidenced by market research. In three years of research and testing, when we created an average of 200 variants for each product, we have achieved “We are proud – a cream that is not yet offered by any cosmetics manufacturer. It is a 100% natural cream that is able to rejuvenate facial skin without causing irritation, but on the contrary – at the same time soothes reddened, rosacea – affected skin,” says Brūniņa.

All over the world, natural cosmetics are experiencing explosive popularity, but so far there has been a lack of products for people with problematic skin, Brūniņa admits.

According to her, the prevalence of rosacea in the Nordic countries is high – it affects 10% and more of the population. Most of the symptoms of rosacea appear after the age of 30 and due to rosacea, reddened facial skin always suffers from premature aging. Therefore, “Labrains” researchers are pleased that they have finally managed to help these people, admits Brūniņa.

As the company is working on new products and the demand for those already on the market is growing rapidly, in 2020 it was decided to increase production capacity by building a new plant. More than 100,000 euros have already been invested in its construction. SIA “Labrains” is waiting for an answer on financial institutions “high“a loan to business start-ups for the purchase of a production line and the construction of GMP-compliant production facilities. The new production line is scheduled to start operating in mid-2021.

Testing new products

Natural dermocosmetics for young people suffering from acne are currently being tested, Brūniņa informs. Work is also underway to create effective skin care products for people with dermatitis. With the support of European Union (EU) scientists’ funds, the Labrains laboratory has studied a specific delivery system that could increase the effectiveness of natural cosmetics.

The current research project “Development of high-quality natural cosmetics for dermatitis-affected skin using innovative curing systems”, which has received support from the EU co-financed program “Support for the development of new products and technologies within centers of excellence”, aims to develop skin cleansing and moisturizing products. which will not contain irritating chemical ingredients, including those of natural origin.

According to the data of “Lursoft”, SIA “Labrains” was entered in the Commercial Register on October 1, 2018, and its paid-up share capital is 2,800 euros. Last year, the company’s turnover was 23.5 thousand euros, but the profit – 4550 euros. The company had two employees. The sole owner of the company is Brūniņa.
