Munich – Many Munich residents would like to “shoot down” this difficult Corona year in a particularly festive manner, preferably with fireworks and champagne. But according to the Infection Protection Act, a “normal” New Year’s Eve celebration is not possible this year. Eating and drinking with friends and then toasting your neighbors on the street is prohibited.
OB Reiter: “New Year’s Eve is the pure opposite of Christmas”
Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) assumes strict rules for New Year’s Eve – and thinks that’s right. “New Year’s Eve is party time,” he said on Thursday in an interview with AZ. “You don’t just meet with your family – it’s the opposite of Christmas.” He assumed “clear restrictions”, said Reiter. The consumption of alcohol in public has been prohibited in Munich since Wednesday anyway. “This also applies to the glass of sparkling wine on New Year’s Eve. It should be consumed in your own house or garden this year,” a spokesman for the Ministry of Health told Bavarian Broadcasting.

Curfew: No exception for New Year’s Eve either
With the curfew at night, staying outside of your own four walls is also prohibited from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. So far, no exceptions have been made for New Year’s Eve. For most of them, that would have dealt with the issue of firecrackers. Those who do not have their own garden are not allowed to send colorful rockets into the sky.
The police are prepared for the situation. “We will increase our staff on New Year’s Eve. We had to do that last year because of the ban on firecrackers,” says Werner Kraus, spokesman for the Munich police headquarters. As things stand, there will be more controls this year. Violations of the Infection Protection Act are consistently punished. “However, we will proceed with a sense of proportion and examine each individual case. Not everyone who leaves the house is reported immediately,” continues Kraus.
