The murder of John Lennon at the doors of his residence in New York four decades ago is something that the citizens of the Big Apple cannot forget, and they have proven it, yesterday hundreds of them came to sing and dance around the Imagine mosaic of Central Park with which the musician is honored.
“It’s a way for people to get rid of their frustration, because there are still people who are very angry,” says Dave Muñiz, a Beatles fan who, in recent years, has become in charge of maintaining a list of singers. that pay homage to Lennon on the anniversary of his death, with which a certain order is maintained on such a marked day.
In front of about 100 people who sing and dance to the rhythm of Beatles songs like Dear Prudence or Lennon anthems like New York City, Muñiz, who is also dedicated to the song, explains that in the United States, the one from Liverpool was considered as part of the monarchy.
LA REALEZA DE EU
“John Lennon chose the US to live, but he could have chosen anywhere in the world. So he was like our royalty. Just like Yoko Ono,” says the singer.
“We do not have a monarchy, because we do not consider Hollywood people as royalty either. But Lennon was not that. He was a philosopher, a thinker, a songwriter. Imagine – he adds – the things he would have said now with all that is happening, and everything their opinions would contribute. ”
On the Imagine mosaic of Strawberry Fields, as the Central Park area near Lennon’s residence in New York where the Briton frequently walked was christened, fans left flowers, candles, peace symbols, magazines with the face of Lennon, and photos of the former Beatle, both from his early days with his band and from his last years of solo career.
CORONAVIRUS EMPAÑA CELEBRATIONS
Despite the fact that it is a special anniversary, the -3 degrees of thermal sensation that were experienced in New York this Tuesday and the coronavirus pandemic made the number of people who came to celebrate the life of the musician and pacifist much more reduced than normal.
“Normally there are about 2,000 more people here than there are right now, but the cold is making people not come,” says Muñiz a few meters from where Lennon was shot dead one cold December night when he returned, accompanied by his inseparable Yoko, from a recording studio.
