Mayor Bovenschulte has so far not considered tightening necessary. The numbers say otherwise. A brief analysis by our online editorial manager Thorsten Reinhold.
No tightened measures, no withdrawal of the easing on Christmas and New Year’s Eve and no federal-state meetings. In short, this is the attitude of Bremen’s Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD) to the corona situation. The infection process gives no reason for this. Really not? The numbers say otherwise.
The incidence value peaked at 255 in early November in the city of Bremen. It is now halved. So the head of government is right when he only means new infections by the infection process. But he is wrong if we look at other, important corona parameters.
4, 4, 2, 1, 3, 1, 3
0, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0
The first row shows the number of people who died with or from Corona in the state of Bremen in the past week. The one below shows the number of corona deaths at the beginning of October. 18 dead in the past seven days. One dead in seven days a good two months ago. That’s a definite trend – a sad one.
Tense mood in hospitals
How is it in the hospitals? At the beginning of October, eleven patients were still inpatients with a corona infection in one of the Bremen clinics. Now there are 175. So many people haven’t been in the hospital for a few days. So many people have been in treatment since the beginning of the “Lockdown light”. There is no sinking there.
“The lockdown light does not have a great effect,” confirms Karen Matiszick, spokeswoman for Gesundheit Nord. The situation is still manageable. “But there are no fewer patients, and we are worried about the holidays and the 14 days after.”
So Bovenschulte is right when he says that the incidence value in Bremen has fallen. The virus spreads more slowly. But there are more deaths and there is no sign of easing in the hospitals.
Lower Saxony corrects course
Bremen’s mayor emphasized just a few days ago that he wanted to hold on to the easing over Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Just like his colleague Stephan Weil (SPD) from Lower Saxony. However, he has now corrected his course. From Monday, students in Lower Saxony can stay at home. Weil cashed in the easing over Christmas and New Year’s Eve. They are now only valid on the three days of Christmas. One cannot accept the current level of infection, he says as a justification. It is not clear which parameters he means by this.
But the fact is: Lower Saxony has an incidence value of 92 – the state of Bremen has 112.
