New York, the state that reports the most deaths from coronavirus in the United States, reported this Thursday that it reached the lowest number of hospitalizations since the start of the pandemic in mid-March in the country, where infections exceed 5.5 million and deaths the 173,000.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo reported that the number of hospitalizations in the state dropped to a low to a total of 518, the lowest number since March 18. In addition, five deaths and an infection rate of 0.74% were reported, less than 1% for the thirteenth consecutive day.
The total accumulated cases in New York since the virus began to spread is 427,803 and the death toll is 32,865, as reported by the EFE agency.
The state, and especially the city, went from being the global epicenter of the pandemic to keeping the virus at bay after carrying out the economic reopening of all its regions, with a stable and low contagion curve, compared to other parts of the world that after resuming activity they have experienced significant re-growth.
Cuomo highlighted the “hard work” and “discipline” of New Yorkers and thanked them for adhering to the rules of social distance and hygiene to “make a difference, slow the pandemic and reduce the spread of the virus.”, which has allowed New York’s infection rate to go from being one of the highest in the country to the lowest.
On the other hand, the southern state of Florida, the second with the most cases behind California, today registered 4,555 new infections and 117 more deaths from coronavirus.
Florida has accumulated 588,602 cases and 10,186 deaths since March 1, the date on which the first case of coronavirus was officially registered.
The most encouraging data of the day was 6.78% of positive cases in the 67,882 tests that were counted today, an indicator that rose to 18% in July, the month in which the pandemic hit Florida hardest.
The goal of the authorities is to keep the rate of positives below 10%, and since August 12 it is being met.
In Miami-Dade and Broward, the Florida counties most affected by the disease, positive rates today stood at 9.7% and 7.3%, respectively.
Of the 117 deaths of residents in the state known today, 98 were in Miami-Dade, two in Broward and 17 in Palm Beach, the county with the third most cases and deaths.
Of the 4,555 new cases, 1,069 correspond to Miami-Dade, 534 to Broward and 224 to Palm Beach.
The United States is by far the country hardest hit by the pandemic, with 5,549,826 cases and 173,626 deaths, according to the independent count from Johns Hopkins University.
