JAKARTA – Government Spokesperson for Handling Covid-19 Wiku Adisasmito said that there are various ideal criteria related to quality vaccines. These criteria include efficacy and effectiveness.
“These two aspects have a role to play in measuring the benefits of vaccines in controlling Covid-19,” he said during a press conference.
Wiku explained that the aspect of efficacy is the ability of vaccines to prevent disease and suppress transmission in ideal and controlled conditions.
“This can be seen from the results of laboratory clinical trials conducted on a limited number of populations,” he said.
While effectiveness is an assessment of the ability of vaccines to protect a broadly heterogeneous society. He said there are several factors that affect the effectiveness of the vaccine.
“Among other things, the factor of vaccine recipients. Such as age, comorbidities, previous infection history, and the time since vaccination was carried out, “he said.
While other factors are the characteristics of the vaccine. Among them are the types of vaccines, namely active or inactivated. Then the composition of the vaccine, and also how to inject it.
“The next factor is the compatibility of the vaccine strain with the strain on the virus circulating in the community,” he said.
Wiku added that to be able to know the aspect of vaccine effectiveness, surveillance data is needed. This is to see the progress of the case and monitor its impact.
“Immunization data is to see the coverage of immunization and clinical data for supporting individuals to see other aspects that affect individual health conditions,” he said.
Furthermore, related to the efficiency of vaccines, it can be seen from how vaccine spending can prevent other health costs to treat people who are sick due to the disease.
“Apart from these two aspects, there are various other considerations that are being carried out by the government to ensure the main goal is to end the Covid-19 pandemic,” he concluded.
