The City Council of Pontevedra, through the Department of Sustainable Development, has just launched a control campaign on whats Nile geese, considered as a species invasive.
The 14 specimens already registered that were in the area of the river beach of Lérez and at the mouth of the Gafos, Plaza de San José and Augusto González Besada, where they had a nest, are being removed.
According to the councilor Ivan bridges “To have these animals in private facilities it is necessary to have express authorization from the Board and that is what we are talking about, with a very good predisposition on the part of the Xefatura Territorial de la Department of the Environment to find a place where, guarded, controlled and preventing natural spaces from reproducing and escaping again, they can complete their life cycle and are not sacrificed.
Iván Puentes insists that: “As long as we do not have that guarantee and assurance that they will not be slaughtered, the Nile geese will not be removed from the rivers of Pontevedra. No step will be taken that involves the euthanasia of these animals. “
