Why is constant management necessary after lumbar disc surgery?

(Seoul = International News) Reporter Hyung-no Lee = An increasing number of people complain of chronic back pain. In many cases, the cause of back pain is weakening of the muscles that support the bones as the amount of activity becomes insufficient due to the limitation of external activities. Stretching and strength training can relieve symptoms, but if back pain persists for more than 15 months, you should check to see if you have a spinal disorder.

Lumbar disc, which is one of the spinal diseases, can be caused by incorrect posture and lifestyle habits that strain the back. When a constant strain is placed on the lower back, the disc between the vertebrae protrudes or ruptures, compressing the surrounding nerves, creating lower back pain.

Depending on the degree of pressure on the nerves, pain may be felt not only in the lower back, but also in the buttocks and thighs, and numbness in the legs may be accompanied. If the symptoms of the early lumbar disc are not severe, non-surgical treatment is performed. Most of the patients are effective through non-surgical treatments such as drug therapy, physical therapy, and exercise therapy, but if the pain is severe, injection therapy is applied. Herniated disc surgery can be considered if the pain persists so that it is impossible to perform daily activities or if severe symptoms such as paraplegia appear.

“Even if the herniated disc is prolapsed or ruptured, if the acute period is well passed through the acute period, often heals without surgery,” said Lee Dong-yeop, director of the neurosurgery at Jamsil Athlete’s Village Hospital. “He explained.

“Severe patients who have undergone a herniated disc surgery need constant management even after the surgery. Once a weakened herniated disc is not continuously managed, it can recur at any time. After the surgery, the condition of the back and waist management methods are performed once every two years. It’s good to check it out,” he added.
