ANKARA, Turkey, BERLIN and GENEVA, Dec 9, 2020 / PRNewswire / – International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) today launched a digital campaign connecting Turkey’s inspiring and talented refugees with influencers from across Europe, like the musician Antonio Orozco. The campaign highlights the passions and dreams of four young refugees – a singer, a cook, a footballer and a parkour runner – who regain control of their lives through the largest humanitarian program in the European Union (EU).

Turkey is currently home to nearly four million displaced people, the largest refugee population in the world. About 3.6 million of them are Syrians who fled the war that has devastated their country.
The four refugees participating in the campaign are supported by the Emergency Social Safety Net (ESSN), funded by the EU and implemented by the IFCR and the Turkish Red Crescent, in partnership with the Government of Turkey. Provides financial support to vulnerable refugees in Turkey struggling to make ends meet.
Through the ESSN, about 1.8 million vulnerable refugees, mostly from Syria, receive small monthly payments via debit card. Regular cash support allows them to pay for what they need most, such as food, rent, transportation, and medicine. An additional quarterly allowance is provided, depending on family size, with special payments for those in need of additional care. This financial support gives families the dignity of choice and prevents them from adopting negative coping mechanisms, such as taking children out of school to contribute money to the family or going into further debt. Thanks to the ESSN, families regain control of their lives and, ultimately, the power to be themselves.
The digital campaign #powertobe, launched in five countries – Austria, France, Romania, Spain and Turkey – aims to raise awareness of the challenges faced by people fleeing conflict, portraying them as people with passions and talents.
In the campaign, Davud, Amal, Bilal and Hamad talk about their passions, dreams and challenges as they rebuild a new normal in Turkey. “I did not bring anything with me from Syria. We only came with our souls. Cooking helps me forget the outside world. The money I get helps me so that my children do not lack anything, “says Amal.
The campaign sees the four young refugees meet with influencers digitally and discuss their common passions in video messages, online calls and eye-catching cell phone clips. The campaign will run from December 8, 2020 to January 4, 2021.

People receiving ESSN assistance
Hamad / singer
Hamad likes to sing love songs in all kinds of places: at home, outdoors, with friends. Singing helps you overcome your problems. Hamad fled Syria to Turkey as a refugee. The ESSN provision helps him buy the things that are most important to him. He exchanges cell phone clips with Feli from Romania and Antonio from Spain and also rehearses some of their songs, in Arabic of course. Why is music so important to him? For Hamad, he is clear: music is food for the soul.
David / parkour runner
Davud likes all kinds of sports, especially parkour. Sometimes he practices balance and somersaults on mattresses in his family’s living room. But he prefers to train outdoors. In the campaign video, Davud shows his favorite move, the “bargainer,” on a playground. Davud has been living with his parents and siblings in Istanbul since he fled Syria. Use the ESSN grant, among other things, to buy bus tickets and daily breakfast on the way to school. In the videos with Alex from Austria and Phosky from Spain, talks about the best places to practice parkour.
Amal / cook
Amal has her own YouTube channel and regularly posts cooking videos with delicious recipes. For the digital campaign, #powertobe, she makes hummus – without garlic and with lots of tahini, which is her favorite. She talks about cooking with Idil from Turkey and Ryan from France. This mother of three uses the ESSN monthly allowance mainly to buy food. The kitchen allows her to enter a world of her own and opens up new possibilities for her after having dropped out of her studies in Syria: Amal would like to open her own restaurant one day.
Bilal / soccer player
Bilal’s great idol is Ronaldo. He still doesn’t understand why the famous footballer has moved from Real Madrid to Juventus. Bilal’s dream is to play for Real Madrid or for the Turkish football club Beşiktaş. When he came to Turkey from Syria, he was only nine years old. Your family uses the ESSN subsidy primarily for rent. Bilal lives in Istanbul and trains on the small soccer fields in his neighborhood. His brother, Mahmoud is always with him. Online, swap clips with Hamit from Turkey. Of course, it was only about one thing: football.
