On the occasion of the World Human Rights Day and the 72nd anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, on 8 December EU Ambassador Ina Marčiulionytė co-chaired the panel discussion on “COVID-19 and the Human Rights Dimension”. The event was organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR, Department of Treaties and Law with the support of the CEGGA programme.
In her remarks, Ambassador Marčiulionytė underlined the necessity for the respect for human rights to be kept in mind during the fight against the pandemic and in measures aimed to support the global recovery. Special attention should be paid to protect the rights of the most vulnerable groups, including women, children, people with disabilities, the elderly and migrants.
The panel discussion featured the representatives of Ministries of Health, Education and Sports and Labour and Social Welfare, WHO, IOM, civil society and the private sector, allowing for a discussion about the challenges and opportunities of the COVID-19 through the human rights prism in various sectors across the society.
