British health officials warned on Wednesday that people with severe allergies should not be vaccinated against Covid-19 with a vaccine developed by United States (US) pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and German company BioNTech. The warning came after one of the first people to be vaccinated had an allergic reaction.
Just a day after extensive launching a vaccination program British health officials have warned that people with severe allergies should not be vaccinated against the coronavirus with this vaccine for the time being.
The warning came after two British National Health Service staff, one of the first to receive the new vaccine on Tuesday, suffered an allergic reaction and needed medical attention.
Following the incident, the independent Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency has advised people with a history of significant allergic reactions to medicines, vaccines and food not to be vaccinated with Pfizer and BioNTech as a precautionary measure. Hospitals involved in the vaccination program have been informed of the new guidelines.
Concerns about new ones have also been raised in other countries efficacy and safety of the vaccine. Albert Burla, CEO of Pfizer, blamed the politicization of vaccines for growing skepticism.
Burla explained: “I can understand that people can be skeptical, because this time the vaccine was developed very quickly. This time, however, the issue is highly politicized, especially in the United States. People are confused and do not know what to believe because the debate is at a political rather than a scientific level. ”
Burla also said that the vaccine had been properly tested: “All I can say is that we have not reduced any tests. We tested this vaccine in exactly the same way as any other vaccine. What’s more, this vaccine has been tested with much more care and higher standards. The whole industry has been very transparent, sharing data as soon as it is available. ”
