Coronavirus: hairdressers still closed at home, Belgians flock to salons on the other side of the border

Hairdressers are still closed with us but they were able to reopen on the other side of the border, in France. For several days, many Belgians no longer hesitate to go to have their hair cut at our neighbors.

I was 50 meters from the border, and here you can do it, it’s not to be understood

The reservation books are filling up with Belgian customers, as our journalists saw on site. In a salon in Jaumont, a few hundred meters from the border, 2 out of 3 customers present are Belgians.

For Dominique, this is the first time he has come to France to have his hair cut: “It is unthinkable to last so long with long hair. I was 50 meters from the border, and here you can do it, it is not to understand”.

Since its reopening at the end of November, this show has been taken by storm by Belgian customers. “All of our new clients are Belgian. With what is happening at the moment, we think a lot of our hairdressing colleagues in Belgium who unfortunately cannot reopen so we take care of their customers while we wait”, explains the manager of the Mélyssa Brosse salon.

These Belgians sometimes come from far away: “We have all the profiles: young people, older people, who come from the border like Erquelinnes, people who come from Charleroi, La Louvière and also from the Eau d’Heure dam”.

Travel certificate required

There are also more and more Belgians in another border hairdressing salon: around 20 more in 10 days. “I am delighted that we are welcomed in France, testifies Marie-Christine who could not wait any longer. “I had the very neglected aspect, big roots so for my well-being, I had a great need”, she confides.

With this influx and the hygiene rules to be respected, such as the disinfection of equipment between each person, hairdressers like Christelle sometimes have to refuse clients. However, she has extended her working hours: “I still have phone calls to make appointments, but as we are overbooked, we first receive our clients and if there are still places, I will take them”.

Belgians who are going to have their hair done in France must bring a travel certificate or they risk a fine of 135 euros.
