Apple’s Jay Blahnik talks Fitness + and Apple Watch integration in new interview

Apple today officially announced that its new Fitness + subscription service will launch on December 14. Before that launch, Jay Blahnik, who serves as Apple’s senior director of fitness technologies, sat down with The Wall Street Journal to discuss Fitness +, the Apple Watch, and more.

An interesting fact is that Apple Fitness + requires an Apple Watch. If you don’t have an Apple Watch, you can’t use Apple Fitness +. According to Blahnik, the metrics provided by the Apple Watch are intended to serve as motivation for Fitness + users.

“Metrics are motivation. Metrics react to the things the coach says and to the things you do. We think that makes it much more immersive than simply following content that is available anywhere else.

He also added that Fitness + aims to be as “inclusive” as possible by offering workouts for beginners and professionals alike:

“We love the fact that Fitness + is integrated with Apple Watch. It is really inclusive. We put music at the center to motivate a wide variety of people. We have made it really easy to find your next workout, whether you are a beginner or not, and we allow you to use it on all your screens. He sums things up with a running metaphor: “We treat all the areas we engage with like marathons, not races.”

Apple is also focusing on personalization with Fitness, Blahnik explained. The interface will include a “Try Something New” carousel, which will help users find workouts from all categories:

“We always say: it shouldn’t take 20 minutes to find a 20-minute workout. We have a carousel called “Try Something New.” So if you tend to do more linear workouts, like running or cycling, things like HIIT or yoga would be suggested to you, which would move your body in different directions.

Apple Fitness + will be released to the public next Monday, December 14. It will cost $ 9.99 per month or $ 79.99 per year and is also included in the Apple One Premier package for $ 29.95 per month.
