The Turkish Istanbul Basaksehir team decided to withdraw from the French Paris Saint-Germain match in the final round of the group stage due to a racist incident between the assistant coach and the fourth referee.
A verbal altercation broke out between Pierre Weibo, the former Cameroon national team star and assistant coach in the Turkish team, and the fourth referee, ending with the departure of Basaksehir’s team from the stadium and canceling the match in the middle of the first half.
BBC Sports reported that Pierre Weibo accused the fourth referee of making racist chants, which was shown in the televised replays.
The referee declared the red card in the face of Pierre Weibo and the match stopped at this point after the Turkish team decided to withdraw and leave the stadium.
The English newspaper “The Independent” reported that Basaksehir striker Demba Ba said to the referee: “You don’t say the white player, so when you speak you don’t say the black player why did you say that?”
“BN Sports” reported that the proposed solution is to replace the fourth referee with another referee from the video room, provided that the match will be completed from the 19th minute in which it was suspended.
But minutes later, a BBC Sports reporter stated in the match that the Turkish club refused the presence of the fourth referee even in the video room and asked to withdraw him from the match as a whole.
