The decisive factor is not (only) the technology

6.2 Degree of digitization

The degree of digitization is determined by factors such as data sources, data quality, data consistency, system landscape, infrastructure, communication channels, working methods and the entire organization of finance. This raises questions: How digitized does a company have to be so that the audit team can optimally use their tools? And to what extent is the company digitized in all areas, including those that not only affect the testing process? Auditors and audited companies should harmonize and increase their degree of digitization in lockstep. In this way, they can jointly contribute to sustainably increasing the quality and strategic benefit of the audit. The client’s degree of digitization is an essential success factor for a digital test concept. Take two companies as an example: One with a central SAP system and a second customer with a heterogeneous system landscape. Technology can be used in both cases, especially with centrally available data warehouses; however, the effort and quality of the data analysis in heterogeneous system landscapes are often questionable and therefore often not economically sensible. Data quality and data consistency are still major hurdles.
