Discovering New York’s Hidden Avenue

6 avenue and a half hidden
The astonishing avenue 6 and a half, a hidden avenue in New York.

If we stick to the dictionary definition, the word “avenue” designates a “large urban road”. In other words, an artery that does not go unnoticed, far from it!
In New York, however, there is a hidden avenue: Avenue 6 and a half or 6th 1/2 Avenue! This strange numbering is reminiscent of platform 9 3/4 in Harry Potter or floor 7 and a half in the film In the skin of John Malkovich

An avenue reserved for pedestrians

So where is avenue 6 and a half? Simply between 6th Avenue and 7th Avenue. But beware: unlike other avenues in New York, 6th 1/2 Avenue does not cross all of Manhattan but only a few blocks, between 51st Street and 57th Street, in the Midtown district. Avenue 6 and a half is well hidden!
Another specificity of this half-avenue: it is in fact very narrow and only reserved for pedestrians. It is in fact a succession of covered passages, very practical when it rains. A New Yorker secret that you can now walk around! ????
