The man suspected of the fatal stabbing in the French city of Nice was charged with murder on Monday. He killed three people in a church on October 29. One of the victims was decapitated.
The 21-year-old man was gunned down by the police after his act and taken to hospital in critical condition. His health has improved recently, so that he can only now be questioned.
The man is known to have left Tunisia on September 20 and then reported as a migrant on the Italian island of Lampedusa. He then traveled via the Italian city of Bari to Nice, where he arrived by train on the day of the stabbing.
The stabbing followed shortly after the beheading of French teacher Samuel Paty by an extremist Islamist. The victim had shown cartoons of the Islamic prophet Mohammed during a lesson on freedom of speech.
Prosecutors say there may be a link between the two cases. The suspect in Nice had photos on his phone of the man responsible for Paty’s beheading. Images have also been found that can be linked to the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS).
