Why the right-wing populists are the real winners in Romania

The Romanian Social Democrats (PSD) won the parliamentary election on Sunday with over 30 percent of the vote. In second place is the ruling PNL, which had over 26 percent. The Citizen-Oriented Union Saves Romania (USR) was ticked by 16 percent of voters. Absolutely surprising is the very good performance of the right-wing populist nationalist Alliance for Romanian Unity (AUR), which scored particularly well in the diaspora in Spain and Italy. The AUR also sees itself as a representative of all Romanian speakers (also called Wallachians or Aromanians) in the Balkans.
