Scientists have modeled the origin of the moon – Korrespondent.net

The hypothesis about the origin of the Earth’s satellite as a result of the collision of two planets was tested using a new algorithm.

British scientists believe that the Moon may have formed about 4.5 billion years ago as a result of the collision of the Earth with the hypothetical planet Theia. This was reported by the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society magazine.

Theia is a hypothetical planet, formed 4.6 billion years ago, like other planets in the solar system, which could have been similar in size to Mars. She is named after Teia – one of the Titanid sisters in ancient Greek mythology, mother of Helios, Eos and Selene (goddess of the moon).

It is noted that interest in impact theory has grown due to the recent discovery of oxygen isotope inhomogeneity in lunar samples.

Scientists have modeled an alleged collision between proto-Earth and Theia and studied the effect of different speeds of rotation of a hypothetical planet on the impact that forms the moon.

It is emphasized that the conclusions are not the final proof of the origin of the Moon, but they are an important stage in understanding how the Earth’s satellite could have formed.
