There was a time when the cinema was an important, if not the main, source of entertainment and information. What was left of that time is documented by Karl and Martin Zellhofer in their book “Disappeared Cinemas in the Weinviertel”.

While there were once around 100 cinema locations in this region, today there are only five. “The great days of this medium are long gone. Increasing mobility of the population in the post-war years, but above all the advent of television, kept more and more visitors staying away and closing more and more cinemas over the course of the second half of the 20th century, ”says Martin Zellhofer. The cinema was also affected by a growing need for comfort on the part of the audience (back then often uncomfortable wooden armchairs, narrow rows of seats, restricted view, film tears and sometimes very small screens), but also the constantly advancing development of technology – keyword digitization.

Most of the former cinemas in the Weinviertel have already disappeared without a trace. They were torn down or, after renovations, serve as a warehouse, apartment, tavern hall or garage, the original function of which is barely recognizable. Only if you look closely can you still find traces.

In addition to the three pictured, there were also cinemas in the Wagram region in Absdorf (from 1919 in the dance hall of the Gasthaus Dinagl, today the Gerhard Korner Hof residential complex; from 1927 next to the Gasthaus Schauerhuber until the 1970s, today the Schauerhuberhof residential complex) and in Grafenwörth (from 1958 , Closing date unknown, today modern houses).
