This edition of the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema has many peculiarities. It is no wonder in the midst of the epidemiological situation caused by the presence of covid-19 in Cuba.
That is the reason why the Festival is currently being celebrated in a very different way on the Island. Edition 42 was inaugurated last Thursday, December 3, and will run until Sunday, December 13.
At the opening gala, marked by the presence of several well-known artists in the country, the restored version of The Last Supper was screened.
The film by filmmaker Tomás Gutiérrez Alea is the fifth to be restored by the Archive of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Los Angeles. It does so in coordination with the Cinemateca de Cuba and the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industries.
Previously, they had laid their hands on The Death of a Bureaucrat (1966), A Cuban Fight Against the Demons (1971) and The Survivors (1979), as well as the short documentary El arte del tobacco (1974).
According to the organizers of the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema, in this first dose of the most important seventh art event on the Island, only the Latin American Perspective and International Contemporary Panorama sections are presented.
The venues chosen for this are 23 and 12, Riviera, Yara, La Rampa and Acapulco. And the authorities explained that the capacity continues to be limited and with a rigorous control of hygienic-sanitary measures, as it should be.
The only corals that will be delivered now are those of unpublished posters and scripts. But for the March edition of the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema, films will compete in the usual competition categories.
Now there will also be a tribute to the 2020 National Film Awards: Francisco Prats and Senel Paz.
