Mexico City, November 9, 2020.- In Mexico, colorectal cancer is a disease that ranks third
place in incidence, 1 and the first place of mortality among cancers that exist in the country, it is even higher than
prostate and breast cancers.2 Despite this bleak outlook, this condition should be treated in an
timely, allows healing in nine out of 10 cases.3
Colorectal cancer is considered a single type of cancer, although it is treated differently, it is a tumor
from the cells of the large intestine and rectum and can develop from the growth of
bumps known as polyps, which originate from the lining of the colon or rectum. If the tumor grows in the
organism and spreads to other parts of the body, the probability of survival will be five years.
Faced with this situation, the Mexican Association for the Fight Against Cancer (AMLCC) has the Care Program
Comprehensive of Patients with Metastatic Colorectal Cancer, which aims to support patients with Cancer
Metastatic colorectal (CaCrM), especially those that, to be cared for within the coverage of expenses
catastrophic, are referred to hospitals far from their areas of residence and require support to travel to the
hospital where they should be treated and stay close to it.
For the general public and people who already suffer from the disease we list “ten outstanding facts”
of metastatic colorectal cancer:
1.- Colon or colorectal cancer is that which begins in the large intestine (colon) or in the rectum (the final part of the
colon). Other types of cancer can affect the colon. These include lymphoma, carcinoid tumors, melanoma
and sarcomas.
2.- Prompt diagnosis can often lead to a complete cure of the condition.
3.- Almost all colon cancers start in the lining of the colon and rectum. When doctors talk about
colorectal cancer, this is generally what they are referring to.
4.- There is no single cause for colon cancer. Almost all colon cancers start as polyps
non-cancerous (benign), slowly turning into cancer.
