Capture the most detailed image of a sunspot in history

The astronomers indicated that the photo reveals surprising details of its structure.

The US National Solar Observatory public this Thursday the most detailed image that has been taken from a sunspot until now.

The photo was captured on January 28 by the largest solar telescope, the Daniel K. Inouye, which is located in Hawaii. “The image of the sunspot reaches a spatial resolution about 2.5 times higher than previously achieved, showing magnetic structures of up to 20 kilometers on the surface of the Sun “, explained Thomas Rimmele, director of the telescope.

The astronomers detailed that the image reveals amazing details of the structure of the spot seen on the surface of the Sun. According to experts, the streaks of hot and cold gas emerging from the darkest center is the result of the formation of a convergence of intense magnetic fields and hot gas that boil from below.

The concentration of magnetic fields in this dark area traps heat within the star from reaching the surface. Although this area of the sunspot is cooler than others, it is still extremely hot, with a temperature of more than 4,100 ºC.
