Outgoing President Donald Trump has ordered the withdrawal of almost all US troops in Somalia. The Pentagon said on Friday that most of the American soldiers stationed there will have to leave the East African country by early 2021.

The Ministry of Defense has not said exactly how many men are involved. It is also unclear how many troops will remain in Somalia. According to American media, there are currently about 700 American soldiers stationed. In Somalia, the United States has so far supported the government and local security forces in their fight against the Sunni terror group Al-Shabaab.
Some of the withdrawn soldiers could possibly be deployed in countries outside East Africa as a result of the decision, according to the Pentagon. The remaining troops would be stationed in Somalia’s neighboring countries.
