Universities – Hanover – Fewer new students due to the Abitur break in Lower Saxony – Education

Hanover (dpa / lni) – Because there were far fewer high school graduates from Lower Saxony this year, the number of new students in the country has decreased. As the Ministry of Science announced, around 26,500 students enrolled at universities and colleges for the winter semester. In 2019 it was 31,430. This corresponds to a decrease of around 15.5 percent.

Due to the return to 13 school years, only around 10,000 students completed their Abitur in Lower Saxony this year. Most of them were repeaters. In the previous year, however, there were around 32,000 high school graduates. To what extent Corona also has an impact on the numbers, the ministry can only assess when the numbers from the other countries are also available.

In relation to the whole of 2020 (summer semester plus winter semester), the number of new students is just under 30,000 (2019: 36,103). That is a decrease of around 17 percent. At the universities, the numbers fluctuate in comparison to 2019 between a decrease of 32 percent at the University of Hanover to an increase of one percent in Vechta.
