It is a book that has almost no text. Only with square graphics that initially appear simple. But on closer inspection, they tell a lot about New York City and go into depth.
So on the cover there are two abstract pictures, each with three bars: three green spikes in front of a blue background and three gray spikes in front of a silver-colored circle. This juxtaposition is one of the still easy-to-solve picture puzzles associated with every combination: It is the spikes in the crown of the Statue of Liberty and the Art Deco elements in the architecture of the roof of the Chrysler Building from 1930.
The award-winning illustrator Michael Arndt, who lives in New York with his dog Clooney and his cat Greta, created the small, colorful works of art and put them together in a book entitled “That’s New York“in the publishing house Frederking & Thaler has appeared. Almost 100 double pages reflect the essence of New York, “graphically, whimsically funny”, so the subtitle of the book.
NY junkies can still learn
The book is a must for every New York fanatic. The attraction lies in interpreting his graphics, which often only consist of colored dots that mark subway lines, for example, or show the lines of streets and avenues in a checkerboard pattern compared to the narrow and winding streets in Lower Manhattan.
Even someone who has never been to New York will enjoy this book. And if one of the graphics is too abstract, you can scroll to the back of the book. Short texts explain what it’s all about – always about a minimalist Manhattan.
