UMCG is participating in major international research into coronavirus

The UMCG is participating in a three-year international investigation into the corona virus. The researchers hope to better understand and tackle the current pandemic. The investigation, which started on Thursday, should also ensure that governments and medical authorities are better prepared for future pandemics.

The research, in which 26 hospitals from 15 countries are participating, is funded by the European Union. Almost 20 million euros is available. The researchers combine population studies and studies among corona patients from the different countries.

This provides the researchers with information that will enable us to better protect the population in general, and particularly vulnerable groups in the future, during a pandemic and reduce the risks for primary health workers.

“This research provides us with much-needed answers to respond well to the current coronavirus pandemic, as well as the opportunity to learn lessons from the current crisis that will help us better prepare for new and future public health threats of a similar magnitude,” said Alex Friedrich, head of the department of Medical Microbiology and Infection Prevention at the UMCG.
