Panic broke out in New York’s Times Square on Tuesday evening. People fled to shops. However, the trigger turned out to be completely harmless.

New York – Motorbike misfiring has scared passers-by in New York’s Times Square. The police gave the all-clear on Tuesday evening via Twitter: “There is no active shooter in Times Square. Backfires from passing motorcycles sounded like gunshots. ”
The incident shows how nerves in the American public are on edge after the massacres in El Paso and Dayton. The New York police tweeted that the 911 emergency number had many calls from concerned citizens. She appealed to keep calm and not panic: “The Times Square area is very safe!”, She said.
Passers-by flee into shops
The New York television station PIX11 reported that many passers-by mistook the noise for an explosion and fled into shops and buildings. Times Square is a popular tourist and entertainment center.
31 people were shot dead in the El Paso and Dayton massacres over the weekend.
