The photo, which is the result of digital processing, was uploaded by a spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Zhao Lijian. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison called the photo utterly disgusting and Canberra demanded it be removed immediately.
“This is completely outrageous and cannot be justified on any basis. The Chinese government should be really ashamed of this post. It makes them lose their view of the world,” Morrison said.
Another Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Hua Chunying, said it shouldn’t be China who is embarrassed by the photo, but Australia. (Also read: Australia demands that China apologize for photos of soldiers in Afghanistan)
“You are quoting the Australian side that the Chinese government should be ashamed. Shouldn’t the Australian government be ashamed that some of its soldiers serving in Afghanistan committed such atrocities?” asked Hua, as reported by Sputnik on Wednesday (2/12/2020).
Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy in Australia previously said politicians in the land of Kangaroo had “misread” a tweet showing a digitally engineered image of an Australian soldier holding a knife covered in blood in the throat of an Afghan child.
