Last Black Friday was the busiest day for iDEAL ever, the Dutch Payments Association reports. About 4.65 million transactions have been made, for an estimated 395 million euros. It is estimated that almost 50 percent more purchases were made with iDEAL than last year.
According to the Dutch Payments Association online sales increased in the period around Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but purchases in physical stores decreased. The amount spent with iDEAL is almost 30 percent higher than in the same period last year. In shops, more than 10 percent fewer ATMs were used at the counter and turnover in physical shops was between 5 and 10 percent lower.
Compared to a normal week in September this year, in the period around Black Friday, iDEAL was used in online stores almost 55 percent more often, with a turnover that was more than 85 percent higher than usual.
Although the number of online purchases increased, the total number of transactions and turnover in the Black Friday period was lower this year than last year, according to the Dutch Payments Association. This is probably due to the corona crisis, which meant that less was spent in physical stores. Saturday was the busiest shopping day, with 19 million debit card payments that accounted for a turnover of 564 million euros.
