The theme of the decoration this year is ‘America the Beautiful’. As many as 125 volunteers decorated 62 trees, 106 wreaths, with more than 3,200 light strands. They decorated 132 rooms with garlands totaling 366 meters, and placed 17,000 arches around the White House.

The result? A house filled with ‘simple’ green Christmas trees, lots of red baubles and golden ornaments. Only the ‘urnes’ raise eyebrows. On social media it reminds many of burial urns: “Appropriate for a ‘Covid Christmas’”.

After the reveal of the Christmas decorations, the hashtag #MelaniaHatesChristmas quickly went viral. Not only because of the ‘urns’, but especially because of it recordings leaked a few months ago. In it, a frustrated First Lady made some pointed remarks about Christmas: “I am working hard on the Christmas dinner and decoration. Who gives a fuck about Christmas stuff?”

Also in the past, Melania Trump raised a lot of eyebrows with her Christmas decorations. For example, in 2018 she chose blood red trees, which reminded many of the popular series ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’. A year earlier, in 2017, the East Wing of the White House was decorated with white branches, reminiscent of Halloween rather than Christmas.
