Getting to Know the Meaning of Cavani’s Negrito

Jakarta

Attacker Manchester United, Edinson Cavani, got into trouble because of uploads that smelled of racism. What does the word Negrito mean in Cavani’s home country?

Cavani became a MU hero when he won over Southampton on Sunday (29/11/2020). After trailing 0-2 in the first half, MU turned things around to win 3-2.

Edinson Cavani became the motor for MU attack. Bruno Fernandes completed his cross in the 60th minute. After that, the former Paris Saint-Germain player scored in the 74th minute and during the ijury time.

Cavani’s performance earned him a lot of praise. The 33-year-old player responded to one of the words by writing ‘gracias, negrito’.

‘Negrito’ which means black or in this context, black skin. Judged to contain racial action in England.

Cavani have deleted the upload after being notified by the club. Now, he is being investigated by the FA because of the upload to the Instastory

Cavani explained that in Uruguay, negrito does not mean offensive to attack a certain skin color. That is a way to greet close friends, who gave words after Southampton vs MU.

“The message I uploaded after Sunday’s match is intended as a greeting for friends. Thank you for what he said after the match,” Cavani explained on MU’s official website.

Luis Suarez has faced the same problem. ‘Negrito’ arises in the case of peer racism Cavani in the Uruguay national team, and Patrice Evra in the 2011/2012 season.

Suarez, who was defending Liverpool at the time, was found guilty of his words against the Manchester United defender and sentenced to an 8-game suspension.

In the case of Suarez-Evra, former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur player from Uruguay, Gus Poyet, also explained that the word is not an insulting term in their country.

  1. I’m Chilean and white. Father of Italian origin, mother of French origin both white. My mother used to call father “Negrito” just because it’s a loving word very common in Latin America. Cavani was friendly and now he’s been punished for it. So unfair.

  2. What a ridiculous article. Negro/negrito means black haired. It’s a term of endearment. My Uruguayan wife (of spanish Italian origin and for all intents ‘white’) gets called Negrita for her lush long black hair. While it might also refer to someone with a darker complexion as there are plenty of morenos here (I live in Uruguay) it’s never used negatively and never directed towards the black community.
