On Monday, US President-elect Joe Biden discussed during a phone call with Argentine President Alberto Fernandez ways to strengthen ties between the United States and Latin America, Buenos Aires announced.
The Argentine presidency said in a statement that “at the outset of the dialogue, the Argentine president congratulated the elected president on the outcome of the recent elections, and considered his victory a great opportunity to establish better relations so that the United States could meet again with Latin America.”
The statement pointed out that during the call that lasted about 35 minutes, Biden stressed the ears of the President of Argentina that “the continent has great potential, a strong democracy, and we have a broad agenda for work from Canada to Argentina.”
The statement also quoted Biden as saying, “I want to have a strong relationship with the continent.”
Fernandez responded by saying, according to the statement, “The past few years have been difficult for Latin America. We would like things to change and we see in you an alternative.”
The Argentine president stressed that “with a mature and solid relationship, and taking into account security and democracies on the continent, I am sure that we will do things together.”
The conversation also touched on the friendship between them and Pope Francis, of Argentine origin.
“I want to work side by side with you to push Latin America forward, and I believe that we, with the Pope as a partner, will succeed,” Biden said at the end of the call.
