According to an internal document by Sony, i PlayStation players they really love to play in single player, but they struggle to find the time to do it during their days. The study dates back to 2019 and has only been distributed to a few select developers. It should have been conducted on 3,000 representative subjects, but there is no certainty about it.
Basically Sony denies what is seen as a great truth in today’s market: the multiplayer sells, the single player languishes, with a few exceptions. It is the same author of the study who jokes about the matter, stating that, contrary to popular belief, on PlayStation consoles there are many users who prefer to play offline in single player.
However, the problems they encounter are essentially practical in nature (and also explain some choices made for PS5). For example, many play single player only when they know they have at least two hours available, others desist when blocked because they are forced to do long searches on the online help videos, still others are demotivated by the risks of spoilers and there are those who cannot play continuously forgets what he did in the previous session. Basically it seems to read a criticism of the long open world which last more than a hundred hours and which are only suitable for that circle of players who have a lot of time available and who love to do trivial tasks just to pass the time.
For this reason Sony has invented a method to help players better plan their gaming sessions, namely the so-called activities, which give the timing of each mission or segment of the game.
