Controversial French bill about filming police action overturned

The French parliament amends the controversial bill, which prohibits the showing of recordings of police actions under certain circumstances. The stumbling block, Article 24, is being rewritten, the group leader of the largest ruling party said in a press conference.

The article was supposed to protect the privacy and security of agents. The government hoped to achieve this by prohibiting the broadcasting of images that depict officers recognizable and endanger them by publishing them.

Critics inside and outside parliament saw the article as an infringement of the freedom of the press and freedom of speech. They believe that publishing such images can actually help in the fight against unnecessary police violence.
