entertainment">According to Laverne, who is transgender, she was walking in a Los Angeles park with a friend when the man aggressively asked them what time it was. As the actress walked on, her boyfriend checked his watch and passed the time. Then the man called out, “Man or woman?” And Laverne’s companion told him in plain language that he was not pleased with the question. The actress says that the man then attacked. “I look around and I’m like ‘what’s going on here?’ This man beats my friend, who is chasing him. I pick up my phone to call the emergency line, but suddenly that guy has left. ”
entertainment">Laverne says the incident made it clear to her once again that violence against transgender people is far from over. “The world is not safe. I don’t like to think about that, but it is the truth. I know that all too well, ”said the actress, who has often spoken about the aggression she has experienced throughout her adult life. “It does not matter who you are. You can be Laverne Cox, whatever that means, but if you’re trans, you’re going to experience these kinds of things. ”
entertainment">Still, she wants to encourage transgender people who see her message. “When things like this happen, know it’s not your fault. It’s not your fault that people have a problem with you existing. We have the right to walk in a park. ”
