ABN Amro: head office and 2800 jobs gone | Financial

The bank announced this on Monday morning. The head office on Gustav Mahlerlaan near Amsterdam-WTC station will go on sale next year. ABN Amro expects the sale to yield a profit.

The bank says it will continue to rent the building until 2025 anyway. A large part of the staff will then work at the former head office in the Bijlmer, which will be renovated sustainably in the coming years. “It will then act as the headquarters for most of the employees who now work at the ABN Amro head office on the Zuidas,” the bank said. The office on the Zuidas will remain the main office, the bank emphasizes.

Due to further digitization, ABN Amro also expects to be able to continue with less staff. Until 2024, the number of jobs at the bank will fall by about 15% from the current 18,952.

The new wave of redundancies of more than 2,800 men will start from next year. ABN Amro argues that forced redundancies are limited by natural attrition and retraining for new roles at the bank.

ABN Amro will also continue to close branches, just like its competitors ING and Rabobank recently announced. The bank has not yet announced how many branches are involved. ABN Amro states that ‘financial coaches’ will continue to support customers: “So that they keep access to banking services.”
