Relatively quiet and imperceptibly, the eighth studio album of the pioneer of “susuriņpop” Don with ten new compositions – let’s not say it fell on his head unexpectedly like snow for Riga City Council, any season for Latvian farmers or Eminema’s new album for Americans, but it came out without excessive advertising, previously released single seas – it is true, listeners have already heard the songs “Tourist” and “I come home”.
You have to try to list Dona’s albums: he probably doesn’t take into account the sweet disc “Loss On” (2006), “Lelle” (2008), “Signals” (2013), “Varanasi” ”(2014),“ Siberia ”(2015),“ Here ”(2016) and“ House. Kaste. Words ”(2018).
Don celebrated the release of his seventh studio album on Valentine’s Day 2018 with a fully sold out concert at “Arena Riga”, but this year a big concert was planned at the stadium “Daugava”, but what we all know – we all know – all public events were cut by a coward crisis, the outcome remained in force. “The journey to the album was quite exciting and was inspired by stories about relationships, love and the sea. For example, sitting across the dunes and looking at the horizon, “Over the Seven Seas” was born. Last September, “Tūrists” appeared, watching the trees undress in the autumn. Each song includes a story – invented or experienced, ”says Don. Mārcis Auziņš, Toms Poišs and Rūdolfs Dankfelds, Rūdolfs Budze (DJ Rudd), Krišjānis Geidāns, Tomijs Vainikainens, Aija Andrejeva, Antra Kūmiņa, Kristīne Pastare and Arnis Račinskis have also participated in the recording of the album. The recording was made in Kim’s Crib, AnsonsLab, TSP Music and Sound Division studios – both in Riga and Berlin, in collaboration with producers Kim Venerström, Kaspars Ansons and Jānis Aišpurs. “The producer’s job becomes simple when you have to work with great songs and voice – Don has both. Making the album, thanks to the collaboration with this great musician, was a fun time in a great company, ”says Kim Venerström.
THROUGH. Don in his usual sound, just a little electronic – fans will like it. In addition to the songs already heard on the radio stations (“Tourist” is recorded in Arthur’s Gold Fund), I would definitely like to highlight “I can’t meet” and “Get up”, and it doesn’t matter if you have to torture your memory while listening to them, or if you haven’t heard them before. from previous Don albums. The beautiful song is “Promise” – it could be the next single to be sent to radio stations. There are also a couple of girls’ favorite pieces – “Please Don’t Leave Yet” and “Let’s Fly”, which also belongs to Don’s repertoire. All right, Don as Don.
PRICE. There are several things that confuse. First of all, the name of the album – well, that’s what the song is called, but it is completely inconsistent with the dominant theme and general mood. Secondly, the choice of the introductory song – “I would come home” – should suit the fifth or seventh, but not the first (from the point of view of the usual arrangement of songs in the album). Thirdly, the English piece “Beautiful Day” inserted between the songs in Latvian – it is not so outstanding that you can’t do without it, but if you really couldn’t do it, you could invent the Latvian lyrics so that this song would not sound like a foreign body in the album. It is unfortunate that he was blunt as a “superstar” of the world in his explanations to the general public about the content of the album and the message of the songs – many would probably like to know what the farewell “Farewell” is at the end of the album.
